The Wedding Puzzle
25-04-2011
Everyone has his or her idea on what a marriage proposal should be like; just bending the knee and presenting the small box containing the engagement ring is so vanilla. Eight-five percent of women polled were disappointed in the way they received their proposal. Everyone agrees, however, that the proposal should be romantic and cleverly put together. It should also contain the three major elements, those being the setting, the question and needless to say, the ring.
The young man in Virginia, Corey Newman, had a somewhat unusual idea on how to get his message across to his sweetheart. The lady of his heart loved spending a part of her afternoons crossword puzzling. This is what prompted him to come up with the original idea and perfect way to ask for her hand. The 28 year old decided to contact the local newspaper, the Washington Post, and managed to persuade his idea to the newspaper. The editors took note and got him in touch with their crossword writer. Together they came up with a cool and original crossword puzzle.
This unique type of wedding proposal is the second puzzle the crossword creator Mr. Klahn has crafted, the first one being 13 years ago. He met with Corey Newman and both of them worked together over a period of time to make this crossword puzzle a very personal one to go along with his very personal diamond ring.
On a rainy Saturday morning just now in April, Marlow had her cup of coffee as usual, which Cory already had gotten for her from his early morning coffee run, bringing home the newspaper as well. Nothing at all indicated that this was going to be a day to remember. The both of them then flung themselves onto the sofa making themselves comfortable. Cory pretended to be solving the crossword puzzle. He acted as if he was stuck, prompting her to take over and fill in the blanks.
Clues revealing such answers as his girlfriends’ first name, “Marlow”, and her last name, “Epstein”. It also contained the name of Cory himself plus the name of her hometown, then some slightly more revealing hints such as “Seek to form a union” and “Wedding dress material”. It took the avid crossword puzzler a while to figure out the 51 across. “Words with a certain ring to them” – the answer of course being “Will you marry me”. At this point Corey got down on one knee pulling out the diamond engagement ring he had in his pocket.
The Proposal as much as the ring are a declaration of love and a desire to commit to a life together. One can imagine how surprised she must have been by both. Needless to say the ultimately stunned Marlow accepted the highly creative proposal, and the couple’s engagement is now official. It did not need to have to cost a fortune to make Cory’s plan absolutely memorable and a story worth sharing.
