Making jewelry can be a rewarding way to make unique wearable creations. To achieve a one of a kind design, jewelry artists can turn to wire wrapping decorative pendants or wrapping decorative beads to reach their desired aesthetic. Wire-wrapped pendants and rings make a funky addition to any jewelry box.

Necessary Supplies

  • Pendant bead 1 inch to 2 inches in diameter with a hole drilled top to bottom
  • 22-gauge jewelry wire
  • Needle nose (rounded nose) pliers
  • Flat nose pliers
  • Wire cutters

Directions

Uncoil 22 gauge wire and trim off 20 inches with a wire cutter. The wire should be straightened to allow the bead to slide on, but does not need to be perfectly in a line as it will be wrapped soon. Slide the bead down the wire leaving 5 inches of wire through the top and leave approximately 14 inches of wire out the bottom.

  1. Bend the bottom 14 inches of wire up to the top of the pendant and back down to the bottom. The first loop must be vertical, it will keep the pendant on the wire. All remaining loops around the pendant can be top to bottom or side to side as the artist chooses. There should be enough wire to loop the pendant at least 5 more times. Leave at least 7 inches for finishing.
  2. The 7 inches of remaining wire should be coiled tightly around the top wire where the wire meets the pendant. It should be wrapped around the top wire at least three times.
  3. Bend the top wire, now wrapped by your lower wire, at a 45-degree angle from the pendant. Trim it to a 1/4 of an inch. Then take that remaining bit of top wire and create a loop using rounded nose or needle nose pliers. This loop will be used to hang the pendant from a necklace.
  4. Take the bottom wire and wrap it two more times around the base of the loop, closing the loop in. Make sure that it comes to the bottom of the loop just created by the upper wire. Trim off excess wire and tuck any rough edges into the loop so that there are no sharp edges.

Tips

A nipper tool is helpful, but most needle nose pliers can trim wire. Make sure that all loose edges are crimped down and tucked down, they can be sharp and catch on clothing.
